Science Explorers, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 8th Mar 2023 @ 8:22pm

At lunchtime 31 children and 4 adults left school and headed by coach to Widnes. The reason for the trip was for a group of science explorers made up of scientists from Years 3,4,5,6 to visit the Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre in Widnes. Jacob one of our Year 6 Science Ambassadors has been working hard to organise the trip and he did a great job making the booking, checking us in and leading us on and off the coach.

On arrival at the centre we dropped our bags off and went to explore the museum. The first gallery visited was an interactive one where everyne had an enormous amount of fun learning through practical hands on science. At half past two we did a soap making worksop where we learnt about the history of soap and the chemisrty involved in making the product. The best bit was getting to make soap, colour it and add a fragrance. The finished products looked great and smelt fantastic.

Next we had a look at the other galleries, including the observation gallery on the top floor- more about that one later.

Fresh air was then needed so outside we went to spend some time on the playground and zipwire. After a while it started to get cold so we headed back inside the museum. However instead of getting ready to head back to Longton we headed to the cafe for our tea. Following a feast we went to collect our bags and started the long climb to the top floor where the observation gallery was to become our bedroom for the night. The views from the room were spectacular, especially as the lights came on across Widnes and on the bridges spanning the Mersey. It was made even better by the fact that it as a clear night and a full moon.

Once sleep areas had been set up , pyjamas were popped on and we settled down to watch a movie accompanied by a range of snacks.

Following a good sleep the scientists were all up and ready for action this morning. Breakfast of cereal and toast was enjoyed before an amazing workshop in the theatre about the universe, infra red light, magnetism and many other things.

The next part of the adventure took us outside to see the sapling presented to the museum in January which has grown from a seed from Isac Newtons tree. The seed had been to space with British astronaut Tim Peake.

Once back insode the children headed back into the interactive gallery to further enjoy the science on offer.

The trip was a huge success, the children were fantastic ambassadors for the school and all had a wonderful time. Memories for life have definitely been created and we all thank Jacob for organising this wonderful opportunity .

Thank you everyone for looking so fantastic in your Rainbow clothes.

The day started with a whole school assembly where we listened to a story about the Rainbow Flag and how it became a symbol of Pride.

Back in class after an assembly rehearsal we continued the work we have been doing in Jigsaw looking at different types of families. We all agreed that every special is special and that it is ok for families to be different.

After that we had a think about our colour, red and the meaning behind it, life. We made a list of amazing vocabulary on the board such as love, heart, blood, growth, happiness, acceptance, sadness and many more. We also had  visit from two members of staff from Hutton Grammar School and they were impresed with our work. The next task was to work in groups to paint these words and symbols on large pieces of paper in readunes to use later in the day.

Following on from the painting task we did some rainbow themed maths and then wrote a recipe for a special family.

After dinner we had a singing rehearsal and began to work in pairs to make equality bracelets ( we will finish making htm during the week).

The day finished with an outdoor assembly where we all shared what we had been doing. We also used our red paintings to form the first row of out giant Rainbow Flag. Mr Dunbar took an aerial shot using his drone. It will look amazing.

Arts Week Wednesday, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 25th May 2022 @ 6:21pm

Another busy day of art in Year 2. This morning the children used the chrome books to research ideas for Jubilee themed coasters. They created 6 different designs before choosing their favourite to turn into a real coaster o keep as a memory of this special historical event.

Once all of the amazing coasters were finished we lernt about the crown jewels and the seven sovreign crwns. Next we did some research and foud out about the Queen ; her likes and her skills. Armed with this knowledge the children created a new crown for the Queen. There were some amazing ideas. Ask your little Panda what they know about the Queen. You will be amazed. They have also shone linking their previous learning of Elizabeth 1 and Queen Victoria to our current monarchy.

Tomorrow the class will be busy getting ready for the jubilee party and also having a go at doing a detailed portrait of the Queen.

Arts Week Tuesday, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 24th May 2022 @ 7:10pm

This morning the children worked with clay. They were given the task of making a clay plate. It could be any shape and had to have a small stand fitted to the base. They all did an amazing job.

Once the plates were made the class lerarnt about the artisit Clarice Cliff who created lovely patterns and pictures on pottery. Having looked at an example called the Circle Tree the children were set their next task. In their sketch books they had to create the design they want to paint on their paints. The design had to be linked to the shape of their plate and could only use 3 colours- red, white and blue.  Work continued on the handbags too. A busy morning !

This afternoon the children went off around school to their groups to do more preperation for the party on Thursday .

Arts Week - Monday, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 23rd May 2022 @ 8:58pm

Arts week has started. This year our theme is The Platinum Jubilee. This morning the class started the week listening to the stry The Queen's Hat. Whilst we were listening to it and looking at the amazing illustrations the children noticed that in all of the pictures the Queen was carrying a handbag. This led us nicely into our first activity. Working in pairs with Miss Harrison and Mrs Woolley to pin templates onto felt and then cut them out ready to sew into pouch bags later in the week. The children also created floral collages within a profile picture of the Queen. The base of the work was a backround of royal images. They look great. The children really thought carefuly about the placement of the paper and jewel flowers. Once the collages were complete we leanrt more about the 70 years of Queen Elizabeth's reign which we linked back to work in history. Next we discussed the things that we know the Queen really likes - dogs, handbags, her family and horse. The class were then challenged to fill horse heads with intrictae , colourful patterns that did not allow any of the white paper to be visible.

Afetr luch the children worked in groups around school with children from Key Stage 2. Some did drama, some were making table decorations, some were creating performance poetry, others were dancing and the final group were thinking about food and making biscuits. All of the afternoon activities will come together in the form of a Jubilee party on Thursday afternoon for invited guests.

Panda's at work, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 5th May 2022 @ 7:48am

The Pandas have had another very busy week of learning.

In History the children used photographs to find out about railways in Victorian times. They also looked at some reports from passengers in first and second class carriages to learn about the conditions they travelled in.

Maths this week has been all about fractions, finding 3 quarters, learning that half and 2 quarters are the same and learning to count in fractions.

In English the children really enjoyed planning and writing their own space themed stories bringing to an end our work looking at Man on the Moon - a day in the life of Bob by Simon Bartram.Sewing became a little trickier this week as we revisited threading needles and then using running stitch to join 2 pieces of felt together.

Thank you to all of the children who did the mathletics homework last week. This week the homework is a comprehension to complete on Reading Eggs - we have been practising comprehension skills in Guided Reading this week. Well done too for all of the super reading that is being done at home. You are all reading stars.

Exciting Science, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 27th Apr 2022 @ 9:55pm

This week we explored the question How do cactus plants survive in the desert with no water?

We started the session by looking at some huge cacti plants that Mrs Fletcher's dad has grown from seed. Careful observations were made and lots of discussions had.

Great fun was then had using water, kitchen roll and wax paper to investigate how cacti survive.

Ask your child to tell you what we did.

Thank you everyone for all of the amazing reading you are doing. It is so important to read as much as we can , it really is the key to everything.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend.

World Book Day 2022, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 4:27pm

What a wonderful day we have had celebrating world book day !

The day started with a whole school assembly to introduce the teme and to share a story we wrote as a school in 2020. It was also when the stimulus for this year's whole school write was revealed. Our youngest children, the Lions  started the story and it was then emailed from class to class to be developed. It finally reached year 6 this afternoon and they proofread the story and then added to it. At 2.45 we met back in the hall for the world premiere reading of The Magic Potion. Wow !!!! What a story! Well done, again Longton. Please take some time to share the story as a a family and to ask your child which part their class wrote.

Every class has met up via an online meeting with classes at Barden Primary School in Burnley and Reception and Key Stage 1 have had a visit from Librarian Tom.

At Longton, as well as the World Book Day voucher we like to give the children a book as a gift. Your child will have a lovely book in their book bags this evening. Please enjoy reading them.
