English Curriculum
At Longton, we believe that mastering English is the foundation for lifelong learning and effective communication. Our English curriculum is designed to nurture a love for language, developing the skills children need to express themselves with confidence and creativity.
Writing and Grammar Progression
From their earliest marks on paper to producing well-structured and imaginative pieces, our pupils embark on an exciting writing journey. In the early years, we focus on building fine motor skills and introducing foundational writing techniques. As children progress through the school, they are taught how to craft sentences with clarity, using a variety of grammar tools to enhance meaning and style.
By Key Stage 2, pupils engage in writing across text types, exploring narrative, persuasive, and explanatory texts while refining their use of punctuation, sentence structure, and cohesive devices. We aim to develop not only technical accuracy but also a sense of individual voice and style in their writing.
Our approach to grammar is woven seamlessly into writing lessons, ensuring that children understand how the rules of language empower them to communicate effectively. Through engaging activities and focused teaching, we ensure that each child builds a strong foundation in spelling, punctuation, and grammar that they can carry forward into secondary education and beyond.
We are proud of the progress our children make and the pride they take in their written work.
