RE Curriculum

RE curriculum

Religious Education is not a statutory part of the National Curriculum but state-funded, local authority schools must provide a basic curriculum. Schools designated as having a religious character are free to make their own decisions in preparing their syllabuses.

‘The curriculum for a maintained school must be a balanced and broadly based one which ‘promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and of society, and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life’.’ Section 2 79 (1) School Standards and Framework Act.

The aims of teaching Religious Education at Longton Primary School are as follows:

  • To ensure that children develop a broader understanding of different faiths
  • To promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of children
  • To encourage children to have respect for a person’s different needs, views, faiths, cultures and beliefs (i.e. mutual respect)

At Longton Primary School, RE is usually taught for one session each week across the school or lessons may be blocked when appropriate. Lessons in RE are theme led and structured around key questions from the Lancashire SACRE Agreed Syllabus.

In The Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 work is recorded in floor books shared for th whole class to reflect on and in.

R.E. is taught in a variety of ways including teacher led, independent research and class discussion.  Discussions may be recorded informally to show pupils responses and contributions. The lesson is not always recorded in writing.
