Year 3 - The Lions: Blog items
Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall
Date: 30th Jan 2022 @ 10:48pm
In our assembly on Tuesday, we talked about a picture and how old it was and how we knew it was old then Mrs Catterall told us a story about the boy in the old picture. Next, we saw a picture of a light bulb, then an old film projector, after we saw a picture of a phonograph and a gramophone. We then discovered that the boy in the first picture was Thomas Edison and he invented all of the other items in the pictures. We discussed how he would have needed to work hard, that there would have been failures along the way but he kept going. We reflected on when we have had to be like Thomas Edison today and how if we come across something which is tricky or hard work we shouldn’t give up.
In our assembly on Thursday we talked about Rose off strictly come dancing and how well she did because she is part deaf. We also talked how many people want to learn sign language. This is in the news because people were voting for it to be recognised as an official language in law. We also asked if anyone knew any parts of sign language, year 3 and year 4 performed the rainbow song to the school, they have been learning it during their LPS+ lessons. We also talked about which is more important touch, sound, smell, taste, hear or sight.

Wonderful Wednesday!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 26th Jan 2022 @ 8:41pm
The lions have been working very hard on their ‘Amazing Animals’ topic. Over the last few days they have made up a poem and today we have put actions to it. We are hoping to perform this in assembly on Monday - we love an adventure and a challenge!
We have been looking at time, daytime and night time. We have been sequencing our day and today everyone had a clock. We worked very hard at showing o clock. I am sure the children will be happy to talk about this and even show you on a clock at home.

In our assembly on Tuesday we focused on dreams and goals. We are learning to face the big fears of our mountains / challenges. We read a story about a rescue dog that helps in the cold misty mountains and a little boys life, that story taught us not to give up.
On Thursday we had our picture news assembly with the question - is it ever fair to treat others differently because of their looks? We discussed that a Chinese footballer had to cover up his tattoo and he had no choice. We also thought about other jobs like nurses, soldiers and chefs etc. We talked about how it’s not right to judge people by their looks or their culture.

Amazing Animals!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 11:29pm
The Lions are really enjoying their new topic for this half term - Amazing Animals. We are now looking at owls, bats and other nocturnal animals. We have a vetinary surgery in class and we have been creating art with papier-mâché, charcoal and now pom pom pegs.
We had a special talk today from the dental hygienist and we looked at healthy and unhealthy snacks. In the coming weeks we are having a visit from Penwortham fire station and we are also going shopping to Booths to look at healthy foods where we will take a shopping list to buy and try some fruit and vegetables back in school. We also have a special dance team coming to work with us for Chinese New Year. Busy! Busy! Lots of adventures and new challenges!
A huge thank you for our super special readers! Please let us know if you would be interested in coming to read a story. We really appreciate your help and support.
A big thank you to Mrs. Musgrove who got us a very special and inspiring message from Captain Polar Preet. We have been talking about adventures, challenges and the South Pole so this was wonderful to share in class. The photographs we viewed online were amazing.
Almost finished! Thank you for the wonderful projects we have received (the children will share these in class and they will be displayed in school) and also a big thank you for the reading you are doing at home. The children are doing very well and they are very proud.
Please look on Google Classrooms for a new spring homework pick and mix.
Reminder - books that were borrowed from Longton Library now need to be returned please.
Thank you,
Mrs. Thomson

On Tuesday in assembly, we were taking about what our Jigsaw lessons are all about - Friendships, how to be respectful, ways to keep safe, working together as a team, how our bodies change as we get older. This half term our topic is all about dreams and goals. We also mentioned what we might want to do in the future for a job. We thought about how the journey to this might be a bit of a roller coaster, there can be ups and downs and sometimes people change direction to end up doing a different job than the one they first wanted. But all the way we have to remember our learning powers to work hard and self improve, to show commitment, resilience and perseverance.
On Thursday our picture news assembly was all about the James Webb Telescope. This is in the news this week because NASA have sent it up into space to find out what our Universe looks like.
I wonder if when we grow up we might get to go into space ourselves. Does anyone want to be an astronaut? Scientists, engineers, designers will all work together to design the space telescope, it takes a long time to create and test. These people both boys and girls will have had to use their learning powers like we talked about in assembly on Tuesday.

A wonderful star to 2022!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 6th Jan 2022 @ 9:44pm
We are very proud of the Lions. They have settled well, worked hard and enjoyed being busy in their tribe this week.
I have attached pictures from our second PE lesson and also pictures of some of the challenges set in the classroom this week. We have also started learning about penguins as part of our ‘Amazing Animals’ topic. We are learning some new poems which I will post next week.
We were all very excited at the snow coming today and we managed to get out before it stopped. We are secretly hoping we get more! Please remember to send hats and gloves in each day.
On Thursday 20th January we would like the children to bring in their second project. This could be based on a hobby or interest or on our topic from last half term. Our topic was traditional tales which included The Gingerbread Man, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and The Gruffalos Child. If you have any questions please catch one of us and we will happily help.
Our super secret readers have started again and we had a lovely story by Mrs.Hunter today called ‘Tidy’. If you are able to help and would like to book a date with us please let us know. We do appreciate and thoroughly enjoy this special story time.
Thank you.
Happy New Year, by Mrs Thomson

Welcome back Lions! The lions have had lots of talk time today and Mrs.Regan and I have enjoyed listening to everyone.
We started the day with PE and also did some work on our new RE topic, Sikhism. After lunch we had a very special visitor from a guide dog called Nutmeg. I am sure the children will enjoy talking about Nutmeg and all the very special jobs he has.
A new pick and mix homework will be posted for this term. I will make sure it is on google classrooms for Thursday (this week) . Please complete one task each week and submit a comment or photograph on the following Tuesday.
Please can you send in any wrapping paper cardboard rolls or empty kitchen rolls for an activity we will be doing soon. Please do not send any empty toilet rolls.
Thank you

Date: 17th Dec 2021 @ 6:00am
The lions have been adventurous, brave, confident and amazing! They really are an amazing tribe! They love new challenges and embrace all adventures with big smiles!
Sleepy Santa!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 17th Dec 2021 @ 5:51am
Thursday started with breakfast with Santa. Mrs. Brown led us outside to Santa spot! We found him!
We then had a live link to the North Pole but Father Christmas was fast asleep. He read us a lovely story, got us up dancing and told us lots of secret information about his reindeer.
The lions finished their shadow puppets - we have sent them home so you can try them at home. Please ask the children how shadows are made.
Please remember to take your ‘Longton library’ books back to the village library when you have finished with them. We will be arranging another visit but we will not get your books back in time.
We have done lots of check ups with our phonics and we are very happy. The children are really working hard and using their robot arms. Please keep working on phonics at home as we do not want to move on until all the children are confident with the sounds we have learnt. I will add some ideas later today.
Thank you.
Does Father Christmas wear a seatbelt?, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 14th Dec 2021 @ 5:25pm
Lots of Christmas fun today! We started our day by having Christmas games and dances in the hall followed by Snowman maths and sorting out costumes for going to church tomorrow. (Please do not go out and buy anything, but if your child does have a white or cream top of any description please feel free to send it in their book bag tomorrow so they can wear it under their costume)
The Lions were busy creating a sleigh in the construction shed this morning! It was fantastic! Great team work and problem solving! Does Father Christmas wear a seat belt? Does he have a helmet under his hat? The conversation was amazing!
Great fun this afternoon at our Christmas Party. The Lions danced and sang all afternoon only stopping for a visit by Father Christmas. We hope you have popped the present under your tree for Christmas Day.
Lots of amazing reading and phonics work - thank you so much! We have been sharing homework everyday and we still have more to share. It’s wonderful!
Thank you for your support and hard work.
Christmas Dinner and Gruffalo Crumble!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 8th Dec 2021 @ 9:21pm
The Lions started their day with phonics and PE. In PE we were finishing our Jack and the Beanstalk story. We used balloons for teamwork, counting and turn taking. The balloons could not touch the floor - the golden egg.
Christmas dinner was a huge feast! After lunch we spotted rhyming words in our story, made a christmas wish list for our home corner and we all got to try Gruffalo Crumble. The children had been going in groups to work with Miss Lynch all morning in the kitchen. What a success! The Lions loved it and had seconds. Please ask your child what went into the Crumble and what was their job in preparing the Crumble. A perfect pudding for your Sunday dinner - with custard! I have included the recipe below.
A visit to the library., by Mrs Thomson
Date: 6th Dec 2021 @ 10:33pm
The Lions had a great start to the day with a trip to the library. Tom gave the children lots of information about how many books they could borrow and how long they could keep them for. Tom read two great stories which had the children laughing and the lions had to join in with some very strange noises in a very quiet library! ( The little car book is a gift from library and does not need to be returned).
We watched ‘The Gruffalo’ song today in Makaton and we are going to have a practise this week.
In Jigsaw we talked about our homes and how they keep us safe, warm and cosy and how they are unique, just like us. The children shared their favourite rooms and why they love their homes. The children then created their house using Lego, chalks outside, drawing materials and construction materials.

Panto Trip!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 1st Dec 2021 @ 10:58pm
The Lion tribe had an amazing day out today in Blackpool. It was a dull and rainy day but inside the theatre we had lots of smiles. It was a great performance and the children got involved with the shouting and booing!
Tomorrow evening is our performance in school - please bring your child at 5.30pm and if possible bring them in a cream coloured or white top of any sort so they can leave this on under their costume. (Please do not go out and buy one - a plain coloured T-shirt would also be fine)
It is the Winter Warmer on Saturday at 2pm. If you are able to help on our class stall please send a message in your child’s book bag so we can let Kelly know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Trip to Blackpool to watch Aladdin, by Mr Pearson
Date: 1st Dec 2021 @ 2:46pm
Today the whole school got on 3 double deckers and travelled to Blackpool Globe Theatre pleasure land to watch Aladdin. We all had a fabulous time thank you very much to all our volunteers who came to help and to Anna for organising.
Tribe of the term!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 26th Nov 2021 @ 5:58pm
The Lions are feeling very proud that Mrs. Brown awarded them the tribe of the term in church on Thursday. They really are superstars!
This week we have worked hard in our phonics, we have completed lots of number tasks and also created a Kandinsky masterpiece after looking at triangles and circles. We have been looking at Wallace and Gromit and talking about the local author. The children enjoyed the stories without words and the cartoon style of book. They created a rocket in our outdoor construction shed or as Isaac called it ‘our Wallace and Gromit invention shed’.
We had another fantastic super secret reader this week and the children thoroughly enjoyed the story. It really is wonderful when we hear the children reading the stories aloud to each other or when they ask to read a story to the whole class.
Thank you for the homework pictures we have had. They are brilliant! The children will share them in class with their friends so please try and have homework in on a Tuesday each week.
If you didn’t manage to do homework last week please don’t worry. I take full responsibility for the technical hitch!
One last thank you for the recycled Christmas decorations that have started to come in.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs. T

A fun old day gang!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 19th Nov 2021 @ 4:26pm
The title of our blog is a comment made by one of our amazing Lions! I just had to pinch it!
We seem to have lots of children wanting to be the teacher at the moment! As soon as my back is turned they are in my chair, taking a register or writing on the whiteboard! It is lovely to see how confident they are but I do keep telling them I never actually sit in that chair!
On Thursday we did lots of talking about kindness which links to ‘One kind word’ for anti bullying week and also our PSED work. We made kindness chains in the classroom and then also made friendship circles outside where we all said kind things about our friends. We had lots of odd socks in the classroom so it was lovely to discuss and share what makes us different, what things we enjoy and being unique.
We have enjoyed planting bulbs today and we have set up an area in the classroom for us to watch and care for our plants as they grow.
Jack and the Beanstalk, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 16th Nov 2021 @ 8:46pm
The Lions are embracing their new topic this week - Jack and the Beanstalk. We started the morning with PE playing giant games and practising five different rolls (the golden egg!) The children were confident to do demonstrations and remembered our safety rules.
We have been looking at shapes in maths and we know how to identify circles and triangles even if they are all different sizes. We made shape pictures and then the children took pictures with the iPads for our shape book. Miss Lynch has started taking groups of children outside and around school being detectives hunting for our shapes.
We are working hard in phonics, please keep looking at these at home and please come and ask for help if you need any ideas or help with how to use them alongside reading. Reading books have been changed today, thank you for your comments and support.
Little bits of info!, by Mrs Thomson
Date: 14th Nov 2021 @ 7:21pm
After a busy week creating boats and bridges we have used all of the junk modelling materials. If you have any cardboard cereal boxes (large or small) kitchen roll tubes, old gift wrap or wrapping paper tubes please send them in for us.
On Thursday homework will be put on google classrooms. Please use your password (which is at the back of the reading record book) to choose ONE piece of homework to complete. I have done a 'pick and mix' homework where you and your child can select one activity to complete each week. Please send a photo in by the following Tuesday. We will share some of these each week in class on a Tuesday.
The children are really enjoying sharing their 'Wow' moments. Thank you to everyone who has completed one and sent them in your childs book bag. I will attach them below so you can print some ready. You can send them in whenever you or your child has that very special proud moment.
Thank you
Mrs. Thomson

We have had another 'Gingerbread' day! We started by doing the gingerbread man dance and then played a variation of tag rugby. I was the gingerbread man getting my revenge on the foxes! We had lots of fun! I'm sure the children will tell you all about this.
We have done number work and phonics as well as setting up a new area on the playground today. I have included a link below to a piece of music we listened to today. It was a big hit with the children!

I hope the children had lots to tell you yesterday about the Snow White performance in school. It was wonderful and we sang and cheered and booed all afternoon!
Today started with squiggle and a wriggle. Our hearts where beating very fast after all that excercise! A great start to the day!
We then had our phonics session followed by maths. We did maths learning inside and then outside we had a number hunt.
We are enjoying using our gingerbread play dough that Miss Lynch made with the children. However it got rather sticky and messy today. The children thought it was great fun!
We have been learning about Diwali and we are busy creating a special light that we will bring home tomorrow.
