Exploring gender stereotypes, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Feb 2022 @ 9:46pm

Today we were lucky enough to take part in a primary futures webinar about gender stereotypes in jobs.

We talked about the types of jobs people can do and played a game with 2 mystery people. We had to ask them questions about their job to see if we could work out what they did.  We were only able to ask questions which would have a yes or no answer.

We were really excited when the organiser asked them some of the questions we had sent in the chat.

We then had to guess what we thought their job was.  It was really hard.  You’ll have to wait to find out. Evie and Noah are going to tell you all about it later this week.

Police dogs, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Feb 2022 @ 9:39pm

We were very exited to see a police dog because we had lots of questions and we thought it would be cool. There were 2 dogs, a German Shepard and a springer spaniel and they were both very clever. It was great to stroke the springer spaniel and it licked  some of us.The 2 dogs, were called Goose and Maverick they were so cute. It took 6 weeks to train Goose and 13 weeks to train Maverick. Maverick is 4 years old and Goose was 6 years old.Maverick is the German Shepard and Goose was the springer spaniel,Goose was older than Maverick by 4years. We had so Much fun stroking the dog.

The dogs live with the police officer and have very important jobs to help keep us safe.  Goose was able to find a mobile hidden hidden in a box in the car park.

Science - digestion, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Feb 2022 @ 9:33pm

Before half term we explored our digestive system by modelling what happens to our food.

The children all took part and had great fun, as you can see it was a messy and gooey job.  Luckily this happens inside our bodies!

Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 6th Feb 2022 @ 3:07pm

Today in assembly on Tuesday we talked about, animals and how they are the same and if they work well together. The animals we saw were penguins, dolphins and whales, zebras and ostriches and a crocodile and a bird. We also talked about when it’s important to work together.

Our Thursday picture news assembly asked the question ‘What type of events do you think deserve a celebration?’ This question came about as the Queen announced a special competition ahead of her Platinum Jubilee later this year.  On the 6th February Queen Elizabeth will have reigned for 70 years!

The competition is to design a pudding.  There will also be a 4 day bank holiday in June and other events too.  We all like celebrating birthdays and weddings and fireworks.

Science - where do our organs go?, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 1st Feb 2022 @ 7:09am

We started our lesson by thinking about how our organs are arranged, what they are called and what function they have as part of our digestive system.

After some research and explanations we were able to create a model of our digestive system and label it.

Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 30th Jan 2022 @ 10:48pm

In our assembly on Tuesday, we talked about a picture and how old it was and how we knew it was old then Mrs Catterall told us a story about the boy in the old picture. Next, we saw a picture of a light  bulb, then an old film projector, after we saw a picture of a phonograph and a gramophone. We then discovered that the boy in the first picture was Thomas Edison and he invented all of the other items in the pictures. We discussed how he would have needed to work hard, that there would have been failures along the way but he kept going. We reflected on when we have had to be like Thomas Edison today and how if we come across something which is tricky or hard work we shouldn’t give up.

In our assembly on Thursday we talked about Rose off strictly come dancing and how well she did because she is part deaf. We also talked how many people want to learn sign language. This is in the news because people were voting for it to be recognised as an official language in law. We also asked if anyone knew any parts of sign language, year 3 and year 4 performed the rainbow song to the school, they have been learning it during their LPS+ lessons. We also talked about which is more important touch, sound, smell, taste, hear or sight.

Science, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 30th Jan 2022 @ 10:34pm

We looked at the teeth of different animals and then used what we knew about the function of different teeth to decide whether an animal was a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore.

We were unsure where to place the frog.  Evie did a bit of research and discovered a frog is a carnivore but a tadpole is a herbivore.

Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Jan 2022 @ 1:48pm

In our assembly on Tuesday we focused on dreams and goals. We are learning to face the big fears of our mountains / challenges. We read a story about a rescue dog that helps in the cold misty mountains and a little boys life, that story taught us not to give up.

On Thursday we had our picture news assembly with the question - is it ever fair to treat others differently because of their looks? We discussed that a Chinese footballer had to cover up his tattoo and he had no choice. We also thought about other jobs like nurses, soldiers and chefs etc. We talked about how it’s not right to judge people by their looks or their culture.

Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 16th Jan 2022 @ 3:09pm

On Tuesday in assembly, we were taking about what our Jigsaw lessons are all about - Friendships, how to be respectful, ways to keep safe,  working together as a team, how our bodies change as we get older. This half term our topic is all about dreams and goals. We also mentioned what we might want to do in the future for a job. We thought about how the journey to this might be a bit of a roller coaster, there can be ups and downs and sometimes people change direction to end up doing a different job than the one they first wanted.  But all the way we have to remember our learning powers to work hard and self improve, to show commitment, resilience and perseverance.

On Thursday our picture news assembly was all about the James Webb Telescope.  This is in the news this week because NASA have sent it up into space to find out what our Universe looks like.

I wonder if when we grow up we might get to go into space ourselves. Does anyone want to be an astronaut? Scientists, engineers, designers will all work together to design the space telescope, it takes a long time to create and test. These people both boys and girls will have had to use their learning powers like we talked about in assembly on Tuesday.

Science melting chocolate, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Nov 2021 @ 7:37pm

Q: what effects how fast chocolate melts?

We used heat packs and different chocolate to explore and observe how they melted.  Most groups discovered the aero chocolate started to melt first and thought this was because it air pockets in it so the chocolate wasn’t as thick in some places.  After a period of time most groups discovered it was actually the white chocolate that completely melted first. It was the galaxy or dairy milk chocolate that melted the least.

Why did each group get different results? What affected our results?

Would we get the same results if the chocolate was in our hands?

Remembrance day, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 7:44pm

Today was a lovely day in school.  The Elephant tribe yet again shone brightly.  We enjoyed listening to Mr Turner and his stories from his childhood about his dad going off to war.  We showed respect during our 2 minutes silence to all those who have died as a result of war, sang a beautiful song and reflected on our word of the year 'UNITY', thinking about how we can be united together.

We have enjoyed several art based activities today.  Take a look at our fabulous work and our amazing outfits.

The children have written their own thoughts and reflections on the things we have talked about today, you will be able to read their work which is in their google drive.  I will post a few on here shortly.

Thank you Elephants for a lovely day.

Happy Diwali, by Mrs Catterall

A crime and punishment review, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 8:17pm

We have been learning about crime and punishment in history this term. We know the crime and punishments in Roman times. One of them isThe Lions where you get thrown into a pit of lions. If you were a slave of a poor person, the Emperor had nothing to take away from you so you would be executed by drowning or you would be thrown in a barrel with a monkey, dog , snake and many more animals. You might have one of your limbs cut off. There are many more punishments!

Crimes in the Victorian times were like stealing food from a local food stall or they could murder someone by stabbing or shooting people.
