Year 6: The Elephants: Blog items

PSHE - Jigsaw bingo, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 10th Sep 2021 @ 8:48pm

We played a great game this week. We filled in a bingo board with our answers to questions like our favourite colour, subject food, the worst TV programme, someone they admire, what sport they would win an Olympic gold medal in etc.  We then had to go around the room to find someone who had the same answer and write their name in the box.  If they managed to fill 3 boxes in a row they shouted ‘Bingo’.  It was a great way to get to know our friends better, see our similarities and differences and accept each other for who they are and how we can like different things and be friends. A fantastic Elephant tribe.

First few days back., by Mrs Catterall

Date: 4th Sep 2021 @ 8:57pm

3 days back and the children have been amazing, they have settled back in and are shining brightly.  This week we began our science topic all about Electricity, explored 3 and 4 and 6 and 6 digit numbers, reading and writing them! Our English work is about the genre of Fantasy. We are focusing on dragons as an aspect of this genre.  We have read a book called - ‘Tell me a dragon’ and matched up sentences to describe the dragons before having a go and writing our own.  We have linked this to our art unit of work where we will explore shades of colour using pencil crayons before designing and making a dragons eye out of clay.

The bug man visit, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 5th Jul 2021 @ 11:39am

This morning we had a visit from the John Vale.  He talked to us about vertebrate and invertebrate as we got to see some animals of different types.

Well done Elephants you were outstanding at listening during the whole session and were very quiet so as not to scare the creatures.

Pippa asked an amazing question and we found out that some animals shrink as they get older.

The slime from an African land scale kills germs. (Elizabeth)

Snakes are venomous not poisionous.  (Olive)

I didn’t know that some animals can see hot and cold, that was interesting, it was why we couldn’t look directly at them. (Elizabeth)

Spider’s webs are the strongest material in the world.  If it was as thick as a pencil it would stop a jumbo jet.  (Noah)

Date: 15th Jun 2021 @ 6:42am

We worked individually then in groups to create a drawing of what we thought our skeletons looked like. Then we sorted some given bones into a body outline before playing a race against time game to check our skeletons against a correct one and move the pieces as needed.  We finished by naming some of the bones with their common names and their scientific names.

Arts Week Thursday, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 27th May 2021 @ 6:05pm

Today we were printing. Earlier in the week we focused on the work of Henri Rousseau- the tiger in the jungle.

We have thought a lot about our outdoor environment and nature during lockdowns with many of us enjoying our country walks. In class we have been learning about the importance of the rainforest so we linked these 2 ideas together to create our own, multi coloured prints.

I only have a 1 photos I’m afraid as my hands have been covered in printing ink most of the day!  Final pieces will be photographed tomorrow when they are dry.

This afternoon we took a bit of time out to enjoy some reading in the sunshine, tennis and finished off with a ice pop.

On Monday we make our own art shirts, take a look, can you find inspirational messages or try and spot a rainbow or 2!

Arts Week Wednesday, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 27th May 2021 @ 5:55pm

Here are our final canvases. They look amazing, the children selected the design they wanted and used rainbow colours.

We also made a group fluid art painting.

Class compliment, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 24th May 2021 @ 9:04pm

We had a lovely afternoon despite the rain.  We played games inside, built Lego models and some children opted for making fairy cakes and chocolate cornflake cakes which they shared with everyone at the end of the day.   Well done Elephants, fingers crossed we can earn some more stars and have an outdoor afternoon before the end of the year. Keep shining brightly and I know we will.

Plants, plants, plants, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 10th May 2021 @ 7:41pm

Today we continued our learning about plants.  We found out about different seeds and how they are dispersed.  We finished the lesson by going into the hall to work in teams to complete a few matching challenges.

Can you match the tree shape to the photo of the tree and the leaf?

Can you complete the loop game matching parts of a flower to their function?

Can you sort the seeds into the forms of dispersal?

Can you match the leaf photos to the names of the trees they are from?

We were all focused on our learning and spotted by Mrs Woolley who gave us a class compliment.

Well done Elephants.  :)

Chromebooks, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 3rd May 2021 @ 5:56pm

We have been learning how to use the new chrome books in class. Here we are reading  opening up our homework - 4 reasons why the rainforests are important and them creating a slide show of them with more information we have gathered together. For homework the children then had to edit their slideshows changing the font size, colour and adding pictures.
