D&T: Structures, by Mr Coxhead

Date: 5th Oct 2016 @ 5:25pm

We began our D&T topic on structures today. We have some potential structural engineers within the class!

After looking at examples of different free-standing structures that we come across in everyday life, the children split into groups and came up with designs for free-standing towers that could be made from only art straws and sellotape. Each group was limited to 20 straws. Once designs had been finalised, the groups went ahead and built their towers. The towers started well with some sound structural decisions made by each engineering team. However, things took a turn for the worse when our budding engineers got their heads 'stuck in the clouds' by trying to make their towers taller and taller. This resulted in a few towers toppling to the ground.

Next week, the children will make marble runs using cereal boxes. Thank you for all of the boxes so far. Please make sure all remaining cereal boxes are sent in by next Wednesay at the very latest.

Tremendous Tuesday, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 27th Sep 2016 @ 1:55pm

Tuesday has been tremendous !

The Bongos had a great guided reading session this morning where they all worked hard learning how to answer comprehension questions. Spelling was great fun as the class worked with their spelling partners to write lists of homophones.

Maths was a very busy lesson with a number bonds to 20 challenge as the warm up. There were then lots of different activities going on in the room. some children did number bonds to 20 on building blocks, some worked with a partner to make a beanstalk with leaves added in pairs to make 50 and some were set the challenge of finding tricky pairs such as 65+35 to make 100. This group then worked with me to do partitioning leading on to partitioning to add 2 digit numbers.

This afternoon we have had another  look at the landscapes of Jean Metzinger and created our own mosaic landscapes. Using squares was much easier then the hexagons we tried last week.
