World Book Day, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 4:33pm

Thank you Year 6 for an amazing World Book Day . I have loved every minute of it and am so proud of uou all. Following the assembly we took some time to share the Christain parable of the Good Samaritan. Whilst listening to the story we thought about how we can be kind and helpful and later in the day have been working with Mrs Morrison to create some beautiful reflection work.

The bulk of our day involved working thriugh a project with MC Grammar. We have sorted books into the order in which they appeared in the song, thought about books we have enjoyed and then identifoed characters we could include in our own rap/songs. You all did an amazing job writing your own verses. We will get them typed up to share.

Thank you for being amazing

Mrs Fletcher

PS ( sorry) homework will be given out tomorrow. It will be on paper this week. As I am a day late handing it out please can I ask that your named work is handed in on Wednesday next week.

World Book Day 2022, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 4:27pm

What a wonderful day we have had celebrating world book day !

The day started with a whole school assembly to introduce the teme and to share a story we wrote as a school in 2020. It was also when the stimulus for this year's whole school write was revealed. Our youngest children, the Lions  started the story and it was then emailed from class to class to be developed. It finally reached year 6 this afternoon and they proofread the story and then added to it. At 2.45 we met back in the hall for the world premiere reading of The Magic Potion. Wow !!!! What a story! Well done, again Longton. Please take some time to share the story as a a family and to ask your child which part their class wrote.

Every class has met up via an online meeting with classes at Barden Primary School in Burnley and Reception and Key Stage 1 have had a visit from Librarian Tom.

At Longton, as well as the World Book Day voucher we like to give the children a book as a gift. Your child will have a lovely book in their book bags this evening. Please enjoy reading them.

Penguin Update, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 2nd Mar 2022 @ 10:25pm

The Penguin's have been very busy since we returned to school following half term

They have taken part in a webinair on gender stereotypes and another on STEM careers. They have also had a visit from Reece Taylor who spoke to them about living with cerebal palsy. He really was an inspitration to the whole class. We have started a new unit of work in English - Autobiographies and biograpahies- looking at the diary of Anne Frank. This has led to some outstanding discussions about life in Nazi controlled areas during World War 2. Outstanding links to previous learning in History.

In maths they are concentrating on fine tuning their  arithmetic skills becoming more accuate in the use of timestables to successfully divide numbers to 2 digits.

Spelling is currently being develpoed through lots of investigations and through a daily morning task revising phase 5 phonics. Yesterday and this morning we have compared the use of traditional book format and online dictionaries whilst invsetigating prefixes and root words.

Exploring gender stereotypes, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Feb 2022 @ 9:46pm

Today we were lucky enough to take part in a primary futures webinar about gender stereotypes in jobs.

We talked about the types of jobs people can do and played a game with 2 mystery people. We had to ask them questions about their job to see if we could work out what they did.  We were only able to ask questions which would have a yes or no answer.

We were really excited when the organiser asked them some of the questions we had sent in the chat.

We then had to guess what we thought their job was.  It was really hard.  You’ll have to wait to find out. Evie and Noah are going to tell you all about it later this week.

Police dogs, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Feb 2022 @ 9:39pm

We were very exited to see a police dog because we had lots of questions and we thought it would be cool. There were 2 dogs, a German Shepard and a springer spaniel and they were both very clever. It was great to stroke the springer spaniel and it licked  some of us.The 2 dogs, were called Goose and Maverick they were so cute. It took 6 weeks to train Goose and 13 weeks to train Maverick. Maverick is 4 years old and Goose was 6 years old.Maverick is the German Shepard and Goose was the springer spaniel,Goose was older than Maverick by 4years. We had so Much fun stroking the dog.

The dogs live with the police officer and have very important jobs to help keep us safe.  Goose was able to find a mobile hidden hidden in a box in the car park.

Safer Internet Day, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 9th Feb 2022 @ 10:44pm

Tuesday 8th February was Safer Internet Day. The Pandas took part in a Vtes for Schools discussion. They discussed the question  Is the Internet bad for friendships?

They reached the conclusion that the internet is good for somethings but it is still better to play with people face to face. Our discussion went on to playing games online with people that we do not really know and how we have to make sure we are safe.

This lead to us watching the first episode of a series of internet safety stories called Hectors World where we learnt about not giving our details online to people we do not know. If you would like to share the rest of these stories with your chld this is the link.

The Lions have completed their first class compliment challenge sheet. Their class efforts, team work and behaviour have been noticed around school and visitors and school staff from other classes have awarded compliments.

After some wonderful conversations and truly amazing ideas from the children we have decided that we will have a treat afternoon on Thursday. Please send pyjamas or a onesie into school on Thursday in a named carrier bag. After lunch the children can get changed, have treats, do some party dancing and watch a short film.

This week the children have made fossils, learnt a tongue twister about Mary Anning, made carnivore and herbivore teeth and have been pactising their numbers in shaving foam! We have been getting a little messy recently!

The children are shining with their reading and phonics!

Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 6th Feb 2022 @ 3:07pm

Today in assembly on Tuesday we talked about, animals and how they are the same and if they work well together. The animals we saw were penguins, dolphins and whales, zebras and ostriches and a crocodile and a bird. We also talked about when it’s important to work together.

Our Thursday picture news assembly asked the question ‘What type of events do you think deserve a celebration?’ This question came about as the Queen announced a special competition ahead of her Platinum Jubilee later this year.  On the 6th February Queen Elizabeth will have reigned for 70 years!

The competition is to design a pudding.  There will also be a 4 day bank holiday in June and other events too.  We all like celebrating birthdays and weddings and fireworks.
